Though I am very grateful to the American Indian Movement for my civil liberties. I have heard many people say I should know where I’ve come from to know where I am going. I am doing just that. I have heard several AIM members spew hatred for white people. Though I understand their anger, I believe the saying “Fight fire with fire” is a White-man saying, used to tear us apart. I have also heard many AIM members spew homophobia, even against its own people. Members needed their men to be warriors, not “sissy-boys.” It needed its women to be by their side, promised to hold their hand. This coincides with colonial Straightening of our tribes. We, subconsciously, oppressed our sons and daughters who know not a different love by whom they love, but a powerful love for showing us their love. They are true warriors because they fought against a more intimate colonialism. If we stand together as a people, the American Indian Movement can be reborn with greater strength because we are understanding where we come from to understand where we should go.
